Introduction Level (Figures 1-4)

1. Box Step

Notes & Tips

  • Keep balls of feet in contact with the floor at all times

Rhythm & Cues

  • (Quick, quick, slow) x 2

Steps

  1. Quickly step sideways with the left foot
  2. Quickly bring the right foot in together with the left foot
  3. Slowly step forward with the left foot
  4. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so that it is to the side of the left foot
  5. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
  6. Slowly step backwards with the right foot

2. Box Step with Underarm Turn

Notes & Tips

  • Almost exactly the same steps as the Box Step figure for the male
  • Can optionally meet partner early

Steps

  1. First Box Step Figure
    1. Quickly step sideways with the left foot
    2. Quickly bring the right foot in together with the left foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the left foot
    4. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so that it is to the side of the left foot
    5. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
    6. Slowly step backwards with the right foot whilst releasing the right hand and putting it behind the back as well as lifting the left hand at the same time
  2. Second Box Step Figure
    1. Quickly step diagonally with the left foot so that it is to the side of the right foot
    2. Quickly bring the right foot in together with the left foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the left foot
    4. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so that it is to the side of the left foot or optionally step forward with the right foot and rotate the body to meet the partner early
    5. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
    6. Return to normal pose and slowly step backwards with the right foot

3. Cuban Walk

Notes & Tips

  • Can be done forwards and backwards (backwards one is optional)
  • Smaller steps
  • Every third step will slow down
  • During the forwards movement, have a strong frame and lean weight slightly forward to initiate a Cuban walk
  • Try to keep the frame level i.e. no up and down movement

Steps

Forward cuban walk:

  1. (First part - beginning of box step figure - three steps)
    1. Quickly step sideways with the left foot
    2. Quickly bring the right foot in together with the left foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the left foot
  2. (Second part - three steps forward)
    1. Quickly step forward with the right foot brushing past the left foot
    2. Quickly step forward with the left foot brushing past the right foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the right foot brushing past the left foot
  3. (Third part - three steps forward)
    1. Quickly step forward with the left foot brushing past the right foot
    2. Quickly step forward with the right foot brushing past the left foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the left foot brushing past the right foot
  4. (Last part - finish the other half of box step figure - three steps)
    1. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so that it is to the side of the left foot
    2. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
    3. Slowly step backwards with the right foot

Backward Cuban walk after a forward Cuban walk:

  1. (First part - three steps backwards)
    1. Quickly step backwards with the left foot
    2. Quickly step backwards with the right foot
    3. Slowly step backwards with the left foot
  2. (Second part - three steps backwards)
    1. Quickly step backwards with the right foot
    2. Quickly step backwards with the left foot
    3. Slowly step backwards with the right foot

4. 5th Position Breaks

Notes & Tips

  • Three 5th position breaks
  • Lead with a strong frame and use the elbow slightly to go into first 5th position break
  • For the second 5th position break, partners should be next to each other, not back to back

Steps

  1. First five steps of Basic Box Step Figure
    1. Quickly step sideways with the left foot
    2. Quickly bring the right foot in together with the left foot
    3. Slowly step forward with the left foot
    4. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so it is to the side of the left foot
    5. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
  2. (First 5th position break)
    1. Move the right elbow slightly to the right and slowly step sideways with the right foot
      1. Pivot on the right foot and turn both feet to rotate the body slightly
    2. Quickly step with the left foot so that it comes in and behind the right foot to make an offset ‘V’ (5th position i.e. toe to heel)
    3. Quickly do a break step by lifting the heel of the right foot and then lifting the heel of the left foot when the right heel is brought back down
  3. (Second 5th position break)
    1. Slowly step sideways with the left foot and start to bring the left hand in slightly and release the right hand
      1. Pivot on the left foot and turn both feet to rotate the body slightly whilst pushing the left arm in front and slightly down
    2. Quickly step with the right foot so that it comes in and behind the left foot to make an offset ‘V’ (5th position i.e. toe to heel)
    3. Quickly do a break step by lifting the heel of the left foot and then lifting the heel of the right foot when the left heel is brought back down
  4. (Third 5th position break)
    1. Slowly step sideways with the right foot and return back into normal dance pose
      1. Pivot on the right foot and turn both feet to rotate the body slightly
    2. Quickly step with the left foot so that it comes in and behind the right foot to make an offset ‘V’ (5th position i.e. toe to heel)
    3. Quickly do a break step by lifting the heel of the right foot and then lifting the heel of the left foot when the right heel is brought back down
  5. (Finish box step)
    1. Slowly step forward with the left foot at a 45-degree angle and use the frame to turn the lady into the remainder of the box step
    2. Quickly step diagonally with the right foot so that it is to the side of the left foot
    3. Quickly bring the left foot in together with the right foot
    4. Slowly step backwards with the right foot
